Another recommendation - Rurouni Kenshin, one of the very few fandoms where I almost exclusively read het. Considering the tastes of most the people in this community, I haven't recommended anything here before (at least, I don't think I have) but I have to offer this up:

Frozen Moonlight by JaneDrew

Fantastic story, well edited with decent punctuation and grammer (things which become increasingly important to me as I read more) and even though it's a work in progress, it's updated regularly. I last read it about a month ago and there's been quite a few new chapters added since then - nearly doubled in size. Only thing I have issue with is some of the details of the teaching, and that's because of my experiences there, which is probably not relevant to a story set in the US.

Author's summary: In high school, Kaoru Kamiya escaped from a demon. Five years later, she meets a man who looks awfully familiar...

Schism [18 Jan 2005|12:08am]

nishatalitha
[ mood | anxious ]

Schism is a online comic - well, graphic novel, really. It's original, oh, so slashy and beautifully drawn. Also, the artist makes good use of her online media and some pages require flash to work correctly.

As of yet it's still incomplete, but the author updates it every Monday (and sometimes it's even Monday in New Zealand!) and while it's been really good the whole way through, the sheer slashiness is starting to come through. New today was page 9 of chapter 7.

The world it's set in is kinda hard to describe. It's almost post-apocalyptic, only the apocalypse wasn't the Buffy sort of apocalypse. Rather, it's set in a future where computers are really really advanced and it got to the stage where everyone was wireless. And then the schism happened. Something went wrong and all the computers crashed. As a result, computer and 'net usage are tightly controlled by the government. And just about everyone seems to have a white stripe across their hair. I'm not sure why as it's doesn't seem to be because of light.

That's the world in a very small nutshell. I'd try and explain the plot, but it isn't finished yet and things are still being explained. And I couldn't explain anything that has already happened without giving things away.

I cannot recommend this comic highly enough. Crossposted to wellyslash

More recommendations. Because I can. [29 Sep 2004|12:20pm]

nishatalitha
Found a link to a good novel length original slash story yesterday. I enjoyed it so I thought I would pass it on.

Fandom: Original
Title: The God-Eaters
Author: Chartreuse
Rating: NC-17
Status: Complete
Summary: Two outlaws (one of whom really just gets dragged along for the ride) take on the totalitarian Theocracy in a bleak story with some really interesting twists along the way.

Comments: Took me a little while to get into this fic. However, by the end of page two or three (and each page has about four or five chapters on it) I was hooked and persisted in reading until the very end, despite my increasing tiredness. And then I went back and reread a couple of bits. It is very long - it took me a few hours, so unless you read very fast, don't sit down at this one unless you have ages to spend reading. Crossposted to wellyslash

The God-Eaters

And a Star Wars recommendation because I've been searching for this fic for absolutely ages and finally found it again.

Fandom: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Title: In the Prism of Time and Eternity
Author: Padawan Ben & Qwi
Rating: PG - 13
Pairing: Q/0
Status: Complete, with room for sequals
Summary: Obi-Wan is not dealing well with his Master's death. He would like to leave this life, but the Force has other plans for him.

Comments: Long. Very long. I have to admit, I first read it for the name and then I reread it for the story. Quite slow moving, with several perspectives. And it actually fits in fairly well with actual canon. I wouldn't call this AU at the beginning, although it does become so...

In the Prism of Time and Eternity

And its sequal: In the Prism: A World Full of Weeping

More Harry Potter Recs! [19 Apr 2004|05:34pm]

anemonerose
[ mood | okay ]

So, in an effort to waste time, I dug around in my memories section and the memories sections of some friends and came up with six Harry Potter recommendations that I wanted to share with you all. :)

Tempting Fate by ivyblossom
H/D+R, NC17
One-shot
Summary: Ron seems to be having a hard time adjusting to his best friend's love life. Draco suggests that the answer is to let Ron join in.
My thoughts: Be aware that I do not tend to like H/R. I just don't read it. But because this story is by Ivy, I decided to give it a chance. I enjoyed it--it's rather heartbreakingly sad in it's own way, but definitely worth the read.

Untitled by calliope14
H/D/R, NC17
One-shot
Summary: No title or anything here, just pretty much a good old PWP for the sheer hell of it.
My thoughts: This is Callie's attempt at H/D/R that does not have a massive amount of hate or humilation. Again, it's not a trio I usually read, but it's well done and the smut is hot.

Stalemate by aome
H/R, PG
One-shot
Summary: Written for the hprwfqf, the challenge was "Molly and Arthur disapprove of Harry and Ron".
My thoughts: Harry/Ron? Not for me. But this is by Plumeria, who is one of my dearest online friends. I also betaed it. Plu is perhaps the only one who could get me to read--and like--Harry/Ron.

Transfigurations by resonant
H/D, NC17
Novel-length, although it's not divided by chapters but is instead posted as a very long fic
Summary: Five years after Voldemort's defeat, Harry returns to England to help re-open Hogwarts.
My thoughts: In my mind this is one of the classics. It has lovely Post-Hogwarts!H/D and the interactions between the two are believable and beautiful.

Dark Waters by zed_adams
H/D, NC17
One-shot
Summary: Naked boys and a night swim.
My thoughts: This fic is beautiful. The boys are wonderfully written and the story just makes me melt.

Untitled by copperbadge
Gen, unless you count some Homoerotic Boyish Wrestling between the Puppies, (probably) PG
One-shot
Summary: Distracting silliness that's fairly frivolous. In which Remus conjurs popcorn, Sirius drinks tea-flavoured whiskey, and Frank Longbottom is a momma's boy.
My thoughts: So cute, as is all of Sam's writing. Fun interactions between Remus and Sirius and various parents of various Gryffindors, with a bit of Bill Weasley thrown in for fun.

And now two art recs, because I didn't see anywhere that they weren't allowed. :D

Sirius/Remus- Puppies at Play by waccawheels
R-rated, probably not work-safe

Sirius/Remus- First Kiss by ildi_bp
R-rated, not work-safe

Enjoy. :)

HP Rec! [12 Apr 2004|11:30pm]

anemonerose
[ mood | tired ]

I have an HP rec for everyone! :)

Four Letter Words by weatherby
Harry/Draco
NC17
This one starts off like this: It only takes two hours for most of the sixth year boys to find out that Draco Malfoy has a pornographic novel on him, and at lunch the Slytherin table is crowded with a cluster of boys from every house pestering him to let them see.

If that's not enough of a reason to read it, I don't know what is. Oh, and it's TEH HOT, too. :D

Most of the recommendations I post have stood the test of time. They are fics that I read time and time again, and enjoy reading the fifth time nine months later as much as I enjoyed reading it the first time.

Of the two Star Wars series listed below, only one of them - the second one - has stood that test and passed. I have included a link to the first one because it is very good, and because the second one is based off Episode 15 of the first.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Title: Riding the Wheel of If
Author: Mrs. Hamill
Rating: Varies, episode to episode. Ratings are marked.
Status: Complete
Comments: Thirty episodes based off an interesting premise. Sometimes I wonder if the author deliberately tortures Obi-Wan as much as possible, because she can, and it gets either dark or silly at times, but it mainly retains the same high standard of writing.

Riding the Wheel of If

Title: Obi-Wan Kenobi: Jedi Action Hero Series
Author: Susan Anthony
Rating: NC 17
Status: Complete
Comments: I've been looking for the final part in this series since I first read it, and it wasn't out at Master and Apprentice. I found it recently, and read it with great enthusiasm. The secondary characters, Owen and Sarin take over the story somewhat, but they do it so nicely, and they're very interesting. In some ways, I think this series is better than the one it's based on. I certainly enjoyed it more.

Various HP Recs [24 Feb 2004|05:36pm]

anemonerose
[ mood | tired ]

Although my OTP is H/D, I have been bitten by the "Let's read other pairings for once" bug, and have started to develop quite the love and fondness for Sirius/Remus and Percy/Oliver. Both of these loves had previously existed, but they are now being pulled to the forefront. Therefore, below I have a few fic recs that fall into these pairings. :)

Apogee by Bishink
Remus/Sirius, One-shot
Set during the MWPP era
NC17
Summary: A children's game that turns into something more... it's their fifth year, and the gang is well into their MWPP heyday.

Seven Things That Didn't Happen at Hogwarts on Valentine's Day, Or Maybe They Did by lupercali
Remus/Sirius, One-shot, Longish
Set during the MWPP era
R-rated
Summary: "This is the weirdest Valentine's Day yet," Peter mused. / "But not 'ever,'" Remus said dryly.

In This World of Strangers by AjesBlue
Percy/Oliver, Chaptered, Complete
Set after Percy and Oliver's Seventh Year
R-rated
Set in three parts, the first gives us details into Percy's background, the second let's us see dragons, and the third is all Percy and Oliver

Stealing Harry by copperbadge
Remus/Sirius, WIP
Chapters have various ratings up to NC17
Summary: AU- Meet an eight-year-old Harry Potter, a Sirius Black who never went to Azkaban, a Remus Lupin with a steady income, a Severus Snape who can't help liking his archnemesis' son, and a Peter Pettigrew who thinks he could be the next Voldemort...

Keeper's Secrets by folk
Percy/Oliver, Chaptered, Not sure if it's still a WIP or not
Set during Percy and Oliver's Seventh Year, aka PoA
PG13
Summary: Oliver Wood has a secret. So does Percy Weasley. They share the secret of a love that dare not speak its name. Can the Keeper and the Prefect keep their Secrets? And what cost if they don't?

Enjoy. :)

I'm sure you've all most likely read this, but I'm going to post it anyway. Y'know, coz I can, and I'm bored.

Actually, how about we make this a challenge-y thing? Rec the silliest fic you can think of off the top of your head. :D Go on, you know you want to...

How Harry Potter Got His Groove Back by Durendal

An infrequently updated (and possibly abandoned) WiP in which Draco has somehow ended up in an alternate universe, where Harry might be sexy, and Ginny may be on crack. Yes. *coughs* I like sillyness.

PG-13

Crossover [17 Jan 2004|11:31pm]

maudlinrose
[ mood | content ]

Snapshot Memories by sabershadowkat
Fandom: Crossover, HP/Smallville
Pairing: Draco/Lex
Rating: NC-17 for sex
Why I like it: Really, when I decided to give it a go, I had no idea what I was getting into. And I'm glad I did read it, because it's good. It's set quite a way in the future, roughly twelve years post-Hogwarts, and post-Voldemort. I absolutely adore Draco - he's actually an adult, nearing thirty and perfectly poised. It's just fantastic for that alone, but the smut is hot as well, and Lex isn't bad. Yeah. Just... really, really recommended.

More recommendations, because hey, I can. And I thought of more.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Yes, yes. I have and do read this.

Grounded By Lightening

Author: Wednesday
Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan
Rating: R
Status: Complete
Comments: Pretty much ignores the movie. Go for it, I say. It's really sweet and romantic.

Grounded By Lightning

The Gift

Author: Wednesday
Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan
Rating: R
Status: Incomplete
Comments: I didn't realise until recently that both of these were by the same author. It has similar characteristics to Grounded By Lightning - it's sweet, it's interesting, and has good character development/portrayal. I like them.

Summary: "Transmute (15th century): To change or alter in form, appearance or nature, and especially to a higher form." It happens to Obi-Wan, in ways he never dreamed possible. Master and Padawan must go forward from there.

The Gift

Original

Ephebian Paradise

Yes, lots of people turn out gay. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, it is a remarkable series of novel length stories.

Author: Reyna
Pairing: Many
Rating: R
Status: Hands is incomplete. Stories roughly in chronoglogical order. Don't read them in that. Shadow Bringer is my favourite.

Ephebian Paradise

Gargoyles

Author: Kaltheinya
Pairing: Brookly/OC
Rating: Not R yet
Status: Current WIP
Comments: Link in through clicking on the 'E' in the title. Interesting story, I have fondness for it.

Kaltheinya

I shall do others later. I should go to bed now.

So. Recommendations that I have been storing up to post for a while. These are the ones that particularly stand out.

Babylon 5

Elevates the Wise

Author: Viccy
Pairing: Sinclair/Garibaldi
Rating: G
Status: Incomplete
Comments: Very, very good. I wish the author would finish it. One of the few Sinclair/Garibaldi fics around, and it's actually readable! And it's nice to see them heading back together again without actually going against series canon.

Elevates the Wise

Buffy: The Vampire Slayer

There are a couple of Buffy fics that I keep coming back to, despite the fact I read them very little now. While I know of two or three other extremely good ones, I don't read them as I do these two.

Reconstruction, Restoration, Reunification

Author: Wordsmith
Paring: Spike/Xander
Rating: NC-17
Status: Reunification is incomplete
Comments: Reconstruction and Restoration are the same story, told from different perspectives. Reconstruction is from Xander's pov, Restoration from Spikes. They take off from the end of Season Five. Buffy is still dead, and the others have to cope. Anya skips town.

Wordsmith Slash

The fics are all multi-parters, so rather than link to each part individually, I've linked to the page with all those links on. There is also a very pretty story based on the premise: 'What if Spike and Xander woke up next to each other in Tabula Rasa?'

Sweet Memories

Author: Kayla
Pairing: Spike/Xander
Rating: NC-17
Status: Complete (finally!)
Comments: A lovely fic where they're both amnesic, and live on the demon side of town.

Sweet Memories

Lord of the Rings

As The Moon Loves the Sun

Author: sunandshadow
Pairing: Eowyn/Faramir/Grima
Rating: R
Status: Part One of Two
Comments: Despite the the odd pairing (and I read this out of pure horrified curiousity the first time), it is exceptionally well written. While the author has not finished it yet, Arachne at Fanfiction.net has written a second chapter or two to this. It is also good, though not as much.

As the Moon Loves the Sun

Author's Summary: Grima called Wormtongue would lead all Rohan to its doom to posses Eowyn. Faramir finds himself fascinated by the dark Grima. And Eowyn sees in Faramir a golden prince made after the image of the brother she worships. o.O An exercise in possible reactions to unrequited love and the ethics of trying to seduce someone counter to their normal sexual orientation. This story begins a few weeks before Gandalf’s arrival at Edoras.

Pirates of the Carribean

The Matter of Rules

Author: L. M. Griffin
Pairing: Jack/Norrington
Rating: PG-13 and higher
Status: Individual stories complete.
Series. L. M. Griffin. Three stories to date.
Comments: I don't know if there will be more to the series, but the characterisation in these are amazing. If there is a series to convert someone to this pairing, it is this one.

Men Of Our Word
Acts of Piracy
Rooting For You

Ranma 1/2

Hearts of Ice

Author: Krista Perry
Pairing: Ranma/Akane, others
Rating: PG-13 or so - violence, angst
Status: Work-In-Progress
Comments: While I don't entirely agree with how the author develops the characters from the anime, I can see how she gets there, and she does a fantastic job of writing them.

Invisible to See, by pandarus
It's got plot, it's got hot, it's got... woobie!Draco! *cough* Anyway... summary:
Invisible to See is an HP-verse story which isn't written for or about children. It features romance, adventure, betrayal, monsters, sarcasm, bravery and some rather explicit Big Gay Sex. It is very, very, VERY loosely based on Pride and Prejudice -- most sincere apologies to Jane Austen.

I'm only up to Chapter 14, but I am reliably informed that it is complete, 40 chapters, and good value right to the end. Go read it. NC17, Harry/Draco, with, er, other pairings. Yes.

Read it here - invisibletosee. A fic with it's own LJ, ain't that neat?
